Historic Seattle landmark pergola  leveled by truck
The historic iron and glass pergola at Pioneer Square, a national historic landmark and one of the city's most famous meeting spots, was knocked over by a truck and  smashed into pieces early Monday.

The rear of a truck clipped a corner of the   91-year-old structure at about 5:45 a.m. and pulled the whole thing down, police spokesman Sean O'Donnell said. No injuries  were reported.
Passing pedestrians stopped to gape  Monday.

The pergola, built in 1909 as a cable car stop  and as a grand entrance to a lavish underground restroom, was about 60 feet long and 16 feet high. It  fell to a pile of twisted wreckage on the cobblestone square, although  much of the upper canopy framework appeared intact. O'Donnell said it appeared much of the structure could be salvaged,  but no appraisal of the damage had been done. The graceful Victorian-style structure sits on a triangular park that is  the namesake for Seattle's Pioneer Square neighborhood, the area of downtown where the city of Seattle began.

The area includes the site of the city's first sawmill, built in 1853 by Henry Yesler. The "skid road" on which logs were brought down the hillside to the mill gave rise to the term skid row for rough neighborhoods.   Although people down on their luck still populate the area, since the 1960s the Pioneer Square district has become home to fashionable shops and restaurants, condominiums and offices. The cable car tracks are long gone and the large marble and brass restroom has been abandoned for decades, but the pergola designed by architect Julian Everett has sheltered countless residents and  tourists from the rain.
The canopy was restored in 1972 and it, the square's Tlingit totem  pole and the adjacent Pioneer Building were designated as national  landmarks in 1977.

Ultra Mega Links offline indefinatly
Dear viewers, It is with my most humble dissappointment that we have severed our relationship with Crosswinds as of 7 January 2001. This was totally  unplanned and has resulted in our spin off site ULTRA MEGA LINKS to go offline. The reason for this was that Crosswinds has done too many unexpected upgrades that has resulted in loosing our site. This is unnacceptable as a webmaster and unacceptable for you the viewer. I had planned to move Ultra Mega Links off of Crosswinds anyway as part of the ¡DavE!'s Whirled Wide Web! remodel. HOwever this wasn't planned until March first and unfortunatly, I cannot push up that date any sooner at this time. Keep checking back on ¡DavE!'s Whirled Wide Web! and we will be announcing when Ultra Mega Links is back up. I apologize for any inconvenience.

On a stifling hot day, a man fainted in the middle of a busy
intersection. As traffic began to pile up in all directions,
a woman rushed to help him. As she knelt down to loosen his
collar, a man emerged from the crowd, pushed her aside, and
said, "It's all right, honey. I've had a course in first
aid."
She stood up and watched as he took the man's pulse and
prepared to administer artificial respiration. Then she
tapped him on the shoulder.
"When you get to the part about calling a doctor," she
said, "I'm already here."

I harried driving instructor came home from work, kicked off
his shoes, and fell into a chair. "I'm thinking of taking six
or seven of my students to England," he said.
"What on earth for?" his wife asked.
"It might make them feel good to see what it's like to
drive on the left side of the road-legally."
Useless Brain Teasers
This weeks brain teaser
¡DavE!'s Whirled Wide Web! would like to thank you for joining us each week for Brain Teasers.
This is the last Brain teaser of  the series. The answer will appear next week.
A man lives near a pair of railroad  tracks: northbound trains run on one; southbound trains run on the other. He makes a habit of  walking to the tracks and waiting for the next train; as soon as one passes, he goes home. The man does this  randomly day and night, seven days a week, and records  how many trains are headed north and how many are headed south.

Over the years, he sees two trains going north for every one going south. One day, he comments to a conductor that  there are two northbound trains for every southbound one. But the conductor insists that there are exactly as many trains going north as there are going south. How can this be  true?

Useless Trivia
Why do we sometimes cry even when we're happy?

Surprise!  Aside from people who just happen to have something in their eye at the moment, we cry at such times precisely because we are NOT happy.

Stories with happy endings remind us of all the happy endings we have not had in our own lives.  We compare fiction to real life and conclude that real life is the pits.

Psychologists tell us that tears flowing when a real life crisis is successfully resolved stem from the repressed fear and anger that built up when the outcome was in doubt.  Crying at a wedding or other happy time is unconscious
dissatisfaction with how our own romances turned out.

See you just can't win.  It's enough to make a person cry.

¡DavE!'s NEWS
Here's what has happened last week in my life-
Greetings Friends,
Great News! This weekend was pretty fun Serena has one of her famous slumber parties, I was watching 3 count em 3 girls all weekend. lol They ended up trashing the  house but then they ended up having to clean the place up too! But they did it. I ended up cleaning my room and throwing tons of stuff out. I'm moving in March and don't want to take a lot of stuff with me. Well in other news, the site upgrade is going great. I'm a little pissed at my server for Crosswinds. They did an upgrade and lost Ultra Mega links. Unfortuantly I was not planning on upgrading Uml, till next month. So Uml will be down for a month bummer. Oh well till next week.
