More Christmas Traditions around
the world
·Before Christianity, the
Swedish people celebrated "midvinterblot" a winter solstice. It simply
means "mid-winter-blood", and featured both animal and human sacrifice.
·Midvinterblot paid tribute
to the local gods, appealing to them to let go of the winter's grip. The
winters in Scandinavia are dark and grim, and these were the days before
central heating. And the Gods were powerful...
·It is interesting to note
that the Swedish name for Christmas is Jul (Yule), and they believed in
the Jul gnomes (In Finnish tontut, in Swedish tomtar). They were clad in
grey with red caps. The cult of gnomes withstood the onslaught of Christianity
and was eventually linked with things Christian. |

| ¡Journal! |
Dear Journal,
Yay, I finally finished my Christmas
card. Now i have to do the dubious task of uploading it to my site. This
week Serena worked on an ornament for her class christmas tree. It is a
little Christmas tree. When we were talking about it, she said that she
didn't want to do a Christmas tree because her friend didn't have to. Then
I thought that the reason her friend didn't have to make one was probably
because she is Jewish. So I told her that. Well Serena asked why she wasn't
Jewish. I told her because that mommy and daddy weren't Jewish. She wanted
to be Jewish and insisted that when she is fifteen, she is going to become
Jewish. Oh well kids. Well I'm off to start cooking. So till next week.
Happy Surfing!

"Hanukkah-Just what is it about?"
Well this week is Hanukkah. No
I'm not Jewish, but I have many friends who are. I never really understood
this holiday. However I'm sure it is important to those who celbrate it.
So I went to the Hanukkah website and took a look. It is an eight day celebration
of lights, food, songs, and more. The thing is this holiday doesn't seem
as commercial as say for instance "Christmas" So In honor of Hanukkah,
I say Happy Hanukah! =-\ |
