THE POST ABBA BLUES...
By 1983 fans were left confused. ABBA had never gone two years without releasing a new studio album and no one had announced a break up. By Christmas of 1983, ABBA released another compilation album titled "Thank you for the music". Even though the group had not recorded together, it's member's were enjoying solo success which fanned the fire of a break up. Those outside Sweden did not know that Frida, Agnetha, Benny and Bjorn all had great solo careers prior and during ABBA back in their home land. Frida was the first to hit big in the solo arena when she teamed up with Genesis drummer Phil Collins and released "Something's Going On" The single was a hit world wide. Sadly this would be Frida's last and only solo release outside of Sweden. Also in 1983, Agnetha released her first world wide solo album "The heat is on" This album had two singles. "The Heat is on" and "Can't shake Loose" The album also let the public know that Agnetha was a songwriter too. Agnetha contributed to many of the songs that were written on the album. In 1984 it was announced that ABBA would release an album called "Opus 10". However this was just a rumor. ABBA did release a new album of Compilations called "I love ABBA" The album had minor ABBA hits and two songs that were previously unreleased. "Cassandra" and "Should I laugh or Cry" The album had very flat sales. Also this year Agnetha in an interview finally answered everyone's question. ABBA had disbanded. Still even with this announcement, the group's break up was not widely known just assumed. In the Summer of 1984, Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus teamed up with Tim Rice and released the musical "Chess" this by far was a brilliant and superb piece of work. It was also a success and even had the single "One night in Bangkok". Later in 1995, singer Whitney Houston recorded the song "I know him so well" which was originally on the "Chess" soundtrack. It was a major hit for her. In 1986, the group released the album "ABBA Live" The album was another flat sales album for the group. However fans who never got a chance to see the group live, got a chance to hear them live. In 1987, Agnetha gave a world wide release another try and released the album "Eyes of a Woman" Chicago's Peter Cetera produced and sang a duet with Agnetha called "I wasn't the one to say good-bye" The single was a minor hit for Agnetha. From here until 1992, no new ABBA albums were released in the U.S. compilation or studio. Was this the end of ABBA? |
